After reading a Tokina 16.5-135 review, I was not so sure whether I should give this lens a try. Some reviewers were not impressed with the image quality or the visible distortions at certain settings. I decided to try it out myself first before making this very important decision – lenses like these do not come cheap. I went to the photo store with my camera body and asked to try out the Tokina. The salesperson looked somewhat surprised, but proved to be very helpful. I think I must have at least spent an hour there, taking shots with this lens and discussing it with the other photographers there. In the end they also gave me handy tips on how to improve my photography. Needless to say, I walked out of the store with the Tokina, and have had a lot of fun with it ever since. It just comes to show that you should not let one or two reviews put you off.

Distortion is apparent at the first focal length but is controlled at the other focal lengths very well. A negligible pincushion distortion is apparent at the fourth and fifth focal lengths. Also, vignetting is visible at the first focal length but it can be ignored at the other focal lengths since it is very low. Chromatic aberration control is superb; it is totally controlled at all focal lengths.

This post will be my first Tamron lens review. Here I will be discussing the Tamron 10-24mm lens. While the Canon 10-22mm is an f/3.5-4.5 lens and the Nikon has a fixed f/4 aperture, the Tamron is an f/4.5-5.6 lens. This makes the lens a half stop to a full stop slower than the other competitors. The Zoom Lock or ZL mechanism is another original Tamron mechanical engineering concept. It is a simple and convenient feature that prevents undesired extension of the lens barrel when carrying the camera or lens unit on a neck strap. To my knowledge, Konica Minolta do not have an ultra wide zoom in their lens line-up at the moment which should make a third party lens such as the Tamron even more appealing.
